Coconut oil is the best-researched hair oil. It can penetrate the hair shaft and, used before washing, reduces protein loss from both damaged and undamaged hair. That means less breakage and softer hair. It does not directly speed up hair growth.
What are the benefits of coconut oil for hair?
Coconut oil penetrates the hair shaft better than most oils because of its lauric acid. Research shows it reduces protein loss when used as a pre-wash treatment, so hair is stronger and less prone to breakage. It also adds softness and shine and makes detangling easier.
Does coconut oil help hair growth?
Coconut oil doesn't make hair grow faster, but it protects the hair you have from breakage, so lengths are retained and hair looks thicker over time. Massaging it into the scalp is also part of a healthy routine.
