Hair Oil for Men: Benefits, Hair Fall and How to Use It
Updated · 5 min read
Most hair oil advice is written for long hair. Short hair, beards and male pattern hair loss need a slightly different approach.
The short answer
Men benefit from oiling just as much as women but need far less oil — about half a teaspoon for short hair. Massage it into the scalp before washing, two or three times a week. For receding hairline or crown thinning, oil helps only as an add-on; minoxidil and finasteride are the proven treatments.
What are the benefits of hair oil for men?
Hair oil keeps the scalp comfortable, reduces dryness and dandruff-like flaking from a dry scalp, softens coarse hair, tames frizz and reduces breakage. Regular scalp massage is also a relaxing habit that may support hair density.
Which hair oil is best for men's hair growth?
Rosemary oil has the best evidence for male pattern hair loss, with one trial showing results similar to 2% minoxidil after six months. Use it diluted in a carrier oil. For a receding hairline or crown, see a dermatologist early — treatments work best before too much hair is lost.

Can men use hair oil daily?
Not on the scalp — daily scalp oiling causes buildup and can worsen dandruff. A drop smoothed through dry hair for styling is fine every day. For scalp care, two or three pre-wash sessions a week is enough.
How should men apply hair oil?
Put half a teaspoon in your palm, warm it between your hands, and massage it into the scalp with your fingertips for three to five minutes. Leave it for an hour or two, then shampoo. For styling, use one drop on damp hair.
