Hair Oil for Dandruff: Does Oiling Help or Make It Worse?

Updated · 5 min read

Dandruff and hair oiling have a complicated relationship. Many people oil to relieve a dry, itchy scalp — but for most dandruff, leaving oil on too long feeds the problem.

The short answer

Oiling can make dandruff worse if oil stays on the scalp for long, because dandruff is linked to a yeast that feeds on scalp oils. If you have dandruff, oil for 30–60 minutes only, then wash with an anti-dandruff shampoo. Light oils with tea tree (diluted) or coconut oil are better than olive oil.

Is hair oil good for dandruff?

It depends on the type. Dry-scalp flaking, which is small and white, often improves with a short oil treatment. True dandruff, with larger, greasy, yellowish flakes, is linked to Malassezia yeast, which feeds on oils — so long or overnight oiling can make it worse.

Which oil is best for dandruff and itchy scalp?

Coconut oil is a good base because its fatty acids are less favourable to dandruff yeast than olive oil. Tea tree oil has evidence against dandruff in a 5% shampoo, so a few drops diluted in a carrier oil can help. Avoid olive oil if you have dandruff.

How should I oil my hair if I have dandruff?

Use a small amount, massage gently for a few minutes, leave it for 30 to 60 minutes rather than overnight, and wash with an anti-dandruff shampoo containing ketoconazole, zinc pyrithione or selenium sulfide. Once a week is usually enough.

Can dandruff cause hair fall?

Dandruff itself doesn't usually cause permanent hair loss, but scratching an itchy scalp and the inflammation of severe dandruff can increase shedding and breakage. Controlling the dandruff with the right shampoo usually settles the hair fall too.

When is dandruff a reason to see a doctor?

See a doctor if flaking doesn't improve after a month of anti-dandruff shampoo, or if you have thick, crusted patches, red or painful skin, oozing, or flaking spreading to the face and ears. These can be signs of seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis.
