Onion Hair Oil: Benefits, Evidence & Who It Suits
Updated · 5 min read
Onion hair oil is one of the best-selling hair oils in Pakistan. Before you buy, it helps to know where the claims come from and what a bottle of onion oil can realistically do.
The short answer
The evidence for onion comes from one small 2002 study of raw onion juice in alopecia areata, where most participants saw some regrowth. Onion hair oils contain far less onion than that, so their benefit is mostly the carrier oils and scalp massage. They are safe for most people but have a strong smell.
What are the benefits of onion hair oil?
Onion hair oil conditions the hair through its carrier oils, and onion itself is rich in sulphur compounds that are thought to support the scalp. The direct evidence is limited to onion juice rather than oil. Expect softer, better-conditioned hair from regular use, not dramatic regrowth.
Does onion oil help hair growth?
Possibly a little, but the proof is thin. The well-known study used crude onion juice twice daily on patchy alopecia areata in 23 people — a different condition from everyday hair fall, and a much stronger preparation than a commercial oil. No good studies test onion hair oil itself.
Is onion oil the same as onion juice?
No. Onion juice is the raw liquid from crushed onions, which is what the research used. Onion hair oil is a carrier oil — usually coconut or sesame — infused with onion extract. The oil is much easier to use and smells less, but it contains far less of the onion compounds.
Does onion hair oil have side effects?
The main issues are the smell, which can linger after washing, and occasional scalp irritation or redness, especially with raw onion juice. Patch test first, and stop if your scalp stings or itches. People with sensitive skin often prefer milder botanicals like amla or kalonji.
Does Follica contain onion?
No. Follica Herbal Hair Oil is a blend of amla, castor, coconut, almond, kalonji and rosemary. We chose not to use onion because of its strong smell and the limited evidence for onion in oil form. If you want onion, use it alongside our oil on different days.
