Rosemary Oil for Hair: Benefits, Evidence & How to Use It

Updated · 6 min read

Rosemary oil became the most talked-about hair ingredient of the decade almost overnight. Some of that attention is deserved, some is not. Here is what it can do, and how to use it without irritating your scalp.

The short answer

Rosemary oil is the most studied botanical for hair growth: a 2015 trial found it performed similarly to 2% minoxidil for pattern hair loss after six months. It must be diluted — a few drops in a carrier oil — and it takes three to six months of regular use before any difference shows.

What are the benefits of rosemary oil for hair?

Rosemary oil gives a fresh, tingling feel during scalp massage, has mild antimicrobial properties, and has early evidence for supporting hair density in pattern hair loss. In everyday use, its biggest benefit is making a regular scalp massage pleasant enough that you keep doing it — and consistency is what produces results.

Does rosemary oil really help hair growth?

There is promising but limited evidence. A 2015 randomised trial of 100 men with androgenetic alopecia found rosemary oil increased hair count after six months by a similar amount to 2% minoxidil, with less itching. It was one small study, and results at three months were not significant — so patience is essential.

How do you use rosemary oil on hair?

Never apply pure rosemary essential oil to the scalp. Mix three to five drops into a tablespoon of carrier oil such as coconut, almond or jojoba, massage into the scalp for a few minutes, leave for one to two hours, then wash. Two to three times a week is enough.

Does rosemary oil have side effects?

Undiluted rosemary oil can cause redness, burning and itching. Some people are allergic to it, so patch test on the inner arm for 24 hours first. Keep it away from the eyes, and speak to a doctor before using concentrated essential oils if you are pregnant or have epilepsy.

What is rosemary called in Urdu?

Rosemary is called iklil-ul-jabal (اکلیل الجبل) in Urdu, though most shops and online stores in Pakistan simply sell it as rosemary oil. When buying, check whether the bottle is a pure essential oil, which must be diluted, or a ready-to-use blend in a carrier oil.

Does Follica contain rosemary?

Yes. Follica Herbal Hair Oil includes rosemary extract already diluted in a base of coconut, almond and castor oil, alongside amla and kalonji, so it is ready to massage straight onto the scalp without any mixing.
